An Esprit is an object that we connect with, something special that we’re particularly fond of, or that has great significance to us. Lately, I’ve been reading the Harley Merlin book series, and in the series, there is talk of Esprits, so I immediately knew I wanted to design something inspired by the books with this yarn by Crux Fibres. 

In the books, Harley is a magical and an orphan, daughter of two very powerful magicals, one who was inclined to the Dark side of chaos, and the other who was prone to the Light. 

Throughout the sock pattern, cables are knitted; one cable goes on the front side panel and it represents Harley and her search for balance between Light and Dark. The back panel consists of two cables, which represent Harley’s parents, one Light magical and one Dark magical, who loved each other and their daughter above all else, even life.

Materials 

  • 2.75 mm (2US) / 9” circular needles / DPNs 

  • 2 Small cable needles 

  • 3 stitch markers (1 to mark beginning of row, 1 to mark the middle) plus extra marker for the heel. 

  • Esprit 100g – 463 yards – Crux Fibres (Sock - 75% merino / 25% nylon) 

  • Scissors 

  • Darning needle

Intermediate beginner (this pattern uses the heel gusset technique and cables) 

Gauge 

Knit in stockinette in the round – 32 sts and 44 rows in a 4”/10cm
